How to Choose a First Communion Dress

Is a special little girl in your life getting ready to celebrate her First Communion?  If so, you may be wondering how to choose a First Communion dress. 

Although your particular church or parish may have their own specific guidelines, there are some basic rules to follow. 

First Communion dresses are white.  They should be at knee-length or below.  A Communion dress should not fall high above the knee.  Many churches do not allow the dress to be sleeveless.  So, before you purchase a dress like this, check your specific guidelines.  There may be some parishes that allow girls Communion dresses to be sleeveless as long as the arms are covered.  There are some great coverups and shawls available for this situation.

Remember to allow your daughter to be a part of the selection process.  Although you can guide her toward dresses that fit your budget and your taste, the final selection should be hers alone.  This is her special day.  This is a day she has earned.  Remember that you are making a positive memory of a religious occasion.  Do not spoil it for her.

There are many First Communion accessories that are often purchased when getting ready for the special day.  These can include:

• Special shoes and socks
• First Communion rosary
• First Communion bible
• Cross pendant
